Dan Cammish opened his British Touring Car Championship campaign with Halfords Yuasa Racing with silverware after finishing top of the Jack Sears Trophy standings. He opened his weekend by putting in a lap record-breaking run during qualifying, but unfortunately found his time erased after missing a light which changed from green to red in the pitlane moments before he passed it.

Despite this setback the Yorkshireman went back out and put in a time good enough for fourth on the grid and made a great start in the wet to pass 2013 Champion Andrew Jordan. In his first racing laps in the brand-new Honda Civic Type R (FK8) he battled well and brought home a solid finish in eighth place and important championship points.

“I was heartbroken after qualifying because it was probably the best lap I’ve ever driven,” said Dan. “To top the timesheets showed what this car is capable of, so I think I laid down a bit of a marker there. Pulling a time out over a single lap is something I’ve always enjoyed, but I knew the races would be more brutal than anything I’d experienced before – at the end of the day, this is my rookie season, and this was my rookie weekend and it’s a completely different ballpark.”

He again acquitted himself well in race two, but on a drying track his wet tyres lost performance and he fell down the order to 16th as those who took the gamble to start on slicks scythed through the field. The 28-year old bounced back in race three to score more championship points with an 11th place finish and top of the Jack Sears Trophy standings.

“It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but the car is back in one piece, with all four wheels pointing in the same direction and I’ve come away with my first BTCC trophy, so I’d call that a win,” said Dan. “You’ve also got to remember that the FK8 is a brand new piece of kit – I didn’t drive my car for the first time until Season Launch – and we’re perhaps not getting the best out of the tyres yet but I’m with the best possible team for my learning curve in Halfords Yuasa Racing. It was nice to be on the podium, and even though it wasn’t outright, we’ll get there. These guys always do.”
